History
Pemberton Borough was originally settled in 1678, as Hampton Hanover. This name was retained until 1752, when the village was renamed New Mills. A number of early settlers, recognizing the need for protection from fire, organized themselves into a bucket brigade. Each member assuming the obligation of procuring two fire buckets for use when occasion required. They were known as "The Ever Readies" and accomplished some very good work on several occasions. As years passed and the village grew, it was determined by the leading spirits to have a real fire organization. And on the first day of December, 1818, they formed an association known as the New Mills Fire Co., New Mills being the name adopted by the village. Their constitution and by-laws were well defined. And their first officers elected were: Thomas R. Lacy, President; Joseph Sleeper, Vice-President; John S. Earl, Treasurer; and James Rogers, Secretary. Their euipment consisted of one of the old style pumps and two regulation fire buckets for each member.
On December 15th, 1826 the Borough of Pemberton was organized, and at a special meeting held February 8th, 1827, a committee was appointed to revise the by-laws and a resolution passed changing the name to the Pemberton Fire Co.
This organization continued until August 8th, 1834, when a special meeting was held and the name again changed to The Union Fire Co.
On March 30th 1844, a meeting was called for the purpose of again reorganizing the company. The meeting was held and the name formally changed to The Good Will Fire Company.
On May 16th, 1594, a severe fire broke out in the town which threatened to destroy the entire community. It was found that the apparatus on hand was inadequate to cope with the conflagration and were it not for the timely help secured from Burlington and Mount Holly, a large portion if not all of the town would have been destroyed. A town meeting was at once called and a determined campaign started for the construction of suitable water works for the protection of the Borough. The plant was completed and in operation November 29th, 1894.
